Moderna (mRNA_1273) is an mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine made by an American biotechnological company. According to WHO this vaccine is approved by FDA for emergency use in the last month of 2020.

How does Moderna COVID-19 vaccine work?

Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is an mRNA-based vaccine, this contains a small non-toxic genomic part of SARS-CoV-2 serves as a blueprint for the defense system to remember it for the future. This non-toxic genomic part is placed inside a lipid coat and entered into the human body. Where the immune system makes antibodies against these mRNA proteins (unique to COVID-19). T and B memory cells remember these proteins for the future fight.

Does Moderna save from the coronavirus?

Yes, the Moderna vaccine is capable to prevent COVID_19 disease. Although researchers are still studying how efficient is this vaccine. This vaccine helps minimize the extreme cases and death risks. Furthermore, it is recommended by WHO and FDA.

Who should get the shot off Moderna?

This is recommended for are people above 18 and older. People working in health care centers should be vaccinated to minimize the risk of getting an infection from the COVID-19 patients.

Who should not get the shot off Moderna?

According to WHO and CDC studies Moderna is not recommended for pregnant, lactating, and planning to be pregnant in the future. Persons suffering from allergies, to any ingredient of Moderna, should not be vaccinated by this vaccine. People who have pericardial problems should also be taken special attention. individuals who are already vaccinated with either Sinopharm or Sinovac should not beget the shot of the Moderna vaccine.

After 3 months of the previous COVID-19 vaccine, they can get the new shot of Moderna.

Dosage

According to the WHO-recommended dose each person should take two doses of the Moderna vaccine, each dose must be 0.5ml and should be administrated intramuscularly and both doses must be 4 weeks i.e. 28 days apart. A 3rd shot is recommended for immunocompromised persons.

Effectiveness of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine

Based on WHO studies Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is 94.1% effective i.e. in every 100 people 94-95 people will remain safe from COVID-19 disease while only 5-6 people will have a chance of getting the disease. This vaccine is much more effective as compared to Sinopharm i.e. 78% effective.

Side effects of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine

This vaccine has a few mild side effects:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Chills
  • Vomiting
  • Aching in the body
  • Redness or swelling at the site of injection
  • and allergic reaction

If you experience any allergic signs such as:

  • Swelling on face and neck
  • Rashes on all body¬†
  • Difficulty in breathing

which will appear from 1-4 hours of getting shot, you should contact your health care provider or emergency.

If you are suffering from any pericardial-related disease you will experience side effects after a few days of vaccination. These include heavy breathing, fast heartbeat, and heart pain, you must go to emergency or PCP.
